A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL
🌸 My Review
I can see exactly why I landed at 3/5 with this one.
Xia Xiaolan is easily one of the strongest parts of the drama. She is smart, ambitious, practical, and actually knows how to fight back when people come for her. THANK YOU. 👏 Give me a competent female lead over another helpless little flower getting bullied for 30 episodes any day.
Zhou Cheng works for me too. He likes her early, supports what she wants to do, respects her ambition, and does not spend the entire drama playing stupid romantic games.
And somehow that is also part of why this only ended up at a 3.
Because this drama is much more interested in Xiaolan Building the Chinese Economy™ than Xiaolan having a romance. 😂
There is SO much business. Clothing stores. Architecture. Investments. Advertising. Real estate. Career moves. Legal problems. More business. Girl basically arrived in 1983 carrying an MBA from the future. 😭
I love having a capable FL, but I still came here wanting ROMANCE.
The relationship itself is healthy and stable, which I appreciate. Zhou Cheng is supportive rather than controlling, they become an official couple fairly early, and there is no verified formal breakup. That saves this drama from several of my usual complaints.
But the romance often feels like it has to squeeze itself in between Xiaolan's next business venture.
There are kisses and affectionate moments, and the relationship eventually gives us a proposal and an actual wedding. YES, A REAL WEDDING. 💍❤️
Ending — SPOILERS
Then Episode 36 decides to mess with me.
After making me wait all that time for them to get married, Xiaolan gets pulled back into the modern world. She eventually encounters a modern Zhou Cheng counterpart and they clearly recognize a connection between them.
But the drama does NOT explicitly tell me, “Yes, these two are officially together again.”
Excuse me???
You gave me a wedding and then hit CTRL+Z on the marriage. 🤦♀️😭
That is why I cannot give this a straightforward Happy Ending under my rules. It is romantically hopeful, but the final relationship status in the modern timeline is left implicit.
So 3/5 feels right.
Strong FL? Absolutely. Supportive ML? Yes. Stable relationship? Yes. Marriage? YES.
Enough romance compared with all the business plotting? Ehhh.
And that finale definitely cost it some romantic payoff.
Basically: smart woman goes back to 1983, gets educated, builds an empire, gets herself a devoted boyfriend, marries him…and then the drama goes, “Anyway, back to the present!” 😭
WHY DID WE HAVE THE WEDDING THEN?!

💗 Shen Zhiyi’s Drama Reality Check
Finished all 36 episodes. Full ending and relationship spoilers.
- 💕 Romance
- Moderate. Important, but consistently secondary to the career/business story.
- 🔥 Chemistry
- Good and comfortable rather than explosive.
- 💋 Kissing
- Moderate. There are meaningful kisses, but this is not a kiss-heavy drama.
- 🤗 Skinship
- Moderate. Hugs, closeness, and supportive physical affection.
- 🌶️ Spiciness / Adult Intimacy
- Low.
- 🚩 ML Red Flag
- Low. Zhou Cheng is generally supportive, respectful, and devoted.
- 👑 Female Lead Competence
- VERY HIGH. Xia Xiaolan is basically a walking business plan. 😂
- ⏱️ Romance Timing
- Good. They become an official couple relatively early, around Episode 8.
- ❤️🔥 Relationship Payoff
- Strong through the proposal and wedding, but weakened significantly by the finale timeline reset.
- 💔 Breakup
- None verified.
- ⏳ Separation / Conflict
- Some relationship/work/family conflict, plus the major supernatural/timeline separation in the finale.
- 💍 Final Relationship Status
- They marry in the historical timeline. After the timeline reset, the modern versions reconnect, but the drama leaves their renewed romantic status implicit.
- 📖 Plot
- Ambitious and very career/business-heavy. Xiaolan's rise is interesting, but the romance frequently gets buried underneath it.
- 🐾 Animal Harm
- No notable dog/cat or major animal-harm scene currently verified. Do not add a specific animal-harm claim unless independently confirmed.
About these assessments
My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.
⭐ Final Rating: 3/5
⭐ 3/5
Strong FL, supportive ML, stable romance, and a real wedding helped a lot.
But when the business plot gets more screen time than the romance and the finale basically presses reset on the marriage I waited for…3/5 it is. 😭
