A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL
🌸 My Review
Opening Reaction
It had such a promising start. 😭
That is probably what annoys me the most about The Eternal Fragrance. The beginning actually made me think this was going to be a fun xianxia with friendship, academy shenanigans, mystery, romance, and two leads slowly getting attached to each other.
And then the plot just kept adding things.
Secret identities. Immortals. Demons. Divine trees. Ancient grudges. Everybody wanting somebody else’s power. People betraying each other. People dying. People apparently dying. Obsessive second-lead nonsense. More factions. More magic. More suffering.
At some point I was basically just following Song Weilong and Ju Jingyi through the chaos. 😂
Plot / Leads
The basic setup is actually good. Lei Xiuyuan initially approaches Xiao Bangchui for his own reasons, and the two end up entering Chufeng Academy together. Their friendship slowly becomes something deeper while both of their identities become increasingly important to the conflict between the immortal and demon worlds.
I also liked that Jiang Lifei was not completely useless. She saves Lei Xiuyuan, protects people she cares about, questions the whole simplistic “immortals good, demons bad” situation, and eventually becomes central to stopping the disaster threatening everyone.
❤️ Lei Xiuyuan & Jiang Lifei
Their romance is one of the stronger parts of the drama.
By Episodes 8–9, it is already obvious they are becoming attached. Jiang Lifei risks herself trying to save him, and drunk Jiang Lifei even bites his neck and basically announces that he belongs to her. 😂
They have a major trust rupture around Episode 10 after she discovers how much Lei Xiuyuan has hidden from her. This happens before they become an established couple, so it is not a formal breakup.
Their relationship finally becomes unmistakably romantic around Episode 18, when they think they may die and admit how much they mean to each other.
And then Jiang Lifei gives us possibly the most xianxia first kiss imaginable: she bites her tongue and kisses demonized Lei Xiuyuan with blood in her mouth to bring him back to himself.
Romantic? Yes.
Normal? Absolutely not. 😂
By around Episode 20, Lei Xiuyuan is openly promising that he wants to stay with her through this life and future lives.
So thankfully this is not one of those dramas that waits until the finale to acknowledge the leads are in love.
🙄 Where It Lost Me
The problem is that after the romance gets going, the story becomes increasingly consumed by mythology, faction warfare, secret identities, betrayals, sacrifices, and Ji Tongzhou going completely off the rails.
Lei Xiuyuan is believed dead around Episode 27 after sacrificing himself to help Jiang Lifei escape. He survives, but the next stretch keeps the couple physically and ideologically divided while the immortal/demon conflict gets worse.
This is separation/conflict, NOT a formal breakup.
Meanwhile Ji Tongzhou’s feelings for Jiang Lifei go from unfortunate second-lead syndrome to:
Sir, please seek professional celestial assistance. 🙄😂
He becomes possessive, tries to marry her, imprisons her, attempts to take her power, and becomes increasingly violent.
There are so many dramatic revelations, deaths, powers, factions, identities, sacrifices, and ancient grudges packed into the later episodes that instead of making the story feel bigger, it made it feel exhausting.
That promising beginning deserved a cleaner story.
Ending — Happy Ending ❤️
Thankfully, after all that celestial nonsense, the drama does not screw over the main couple.
Jiang Lifei and Lei Xiuyuan face the final catastrophe together and appear to disappear after enduring heavenly lightning.
But this is not a tragic ending.
After a 10-year time jump, they are revealed to have survived, broken the ancient curse between Jianmu and Yasha, and married each other.
The finale shows them living together in Qingqiu, with Jiang Lifei writing stories while Lei Xiuyuan cooks for her. They are affectionate, feeding each other, and basically forcing everyone around them to witness their married PDA. 😂❤️
Main couple survives. Main couple gets married. Main couple ends together.
At least they gave me that.

💗 Shen Zhiyi’s Drama Reality Check
Finished all 33 episodes. Full romance, separation and ending spoilers.
- 💕 Romance
- Moderate — friendship-to-lovers with meaningful emotional focus, although the fantasy plot eventually overwhelms it.
- 🔥 Chemistry
- Good — Song Weilong and Ju Jingyi sell the emotional attachment better than the plot sells some of its mythology.
- 💋 Kissing
- Light — the Episode 18 kiss is memorable, but this is not a kiss-heavy drama.
- 🤗 Skinship
- Moderate — hugs, hand-holding, protecting each other, physical closeness, and eventual married-couple affection.
- 🌶️ Spiciness / Adult Intimacy
- Very low — fantasy romance, not spicy romance.
- 🚩 ML Red Flag
- Low-to-moderate — Lei Xiuyuan begins with hidden motives and keeps major secrets, but becomes deeply protective and devoted.
- 👑 Female Lead Competence
- Good — Jiang Lifei actively saves people, fights, investigates, challenges authority, and refuses to simply accept the destiny assigned to her.
- ⏱️ Romance Timing
- Mid-series — mutual feelings and first kiss around Episode 18, with clear commitment around Episode 20.
- ❤️🔥 Relationship Payoff
- Decent — lots of suffering, but confirmed survival, marriage, and domestic life at the end.
- 💔 Breakup
- No formal breakup after they become a couple. Earlier trust rupture happens before the established relationship.
- ⏳ Separation / Conflict
- High — presumed death, faction conflict, physical separation, differing responsibilities, and late-story chaos.
- 💍 Final Relationship Status
- Married, alive, together in Qingqiu.
- 📖 Plot
- Promising start, messy execution. The academy/friendship/mystery setup had potential, but the drama becomes overloaded with mythology, villains, identity reveals, deaths, and faction warfare.
- 🐾 Animal Harm
- Fantasy creatures/spirit beasts are captured, mistreated, killed, or exploited. No verified dog or cat harm identified.
About these assessments
My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.
⭐ Final Rating
The Eternal Fragrance had a promising start, and that is exactly why 2.5/5 feels right to me.
There were things here I should have loved — fantasy romance, hidden identities, devoted ML, capable FL, enemies everywhere, destiny trying to screw over the couple — but the story became so overloaded that the potential never fully paid off.
At least Lei Xiuyuan and Jiang Lifei survive all the celestial foolishness, get married, and go home to Qingqiu to be annoyingly happy together. 😂❤️
⭐ 2.5/5
