A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL

🌸 My Review

⭐ Rating: 4/5 📺 Status: Finished 💔 Ending: Tragic Ending

Okay, this one surprised me because there is basically no main romance and I still gave it a 4/5. 😂

That alone should explain how much the mystery had to be doing right.

Usually, if you take the romance away from me, you had better replace it with something GOOD. Thankfully, Archives: The Nanyang Mystery actually did.

The story follows Zhang Haiyan/Zhang Hailou and Zhang Haixia, two members of the Southern Archives who become tangled in bizarre murders, dangerous missions, conspiracies, strange phenomena, and Zhang-family secrets.

And honestly?

The friendship is the emotional center of the entire drama.

There may not be romance, but Zhang Xincheng and Ding Yuxi have enough chemistry as a duo that I wasn't sitting there every five minutes screaming:

WHERE IS MY ROMANCE?! 😭

Okay. Maybe occasionally. 😂

But the loyalty, mystery-solving, betrayals, sacrifices, action, and general “why are you people constantly almost dying?” energy gave me plenty to watch.

🔎 Mystery, Adventure & Zhang-Family Chaos

This is where the drama earned my 4/5.

We get mystery cases, hidden motives, supernatural elements, secret organizations, dangerous missions, betrayals, Zhang-family lore, and enough twists to keep everything moving.

Sometimes it gets chaotic, but somehow the chaos mostly works.

And considering this drama gave me almost none of the romance I normally demand, keeping me entertained for 33 episodes is honestly an accomplishment. 😂

👬 Zhang Hailou & Zhang Haixia

These two carry most of the emotional weight.

Their relationship is not a canon romance. It is friendship, loyalty, brotherhood, and a whole lot of suffering.

They're loyal.

They're ridiculous.

They're constantly risking their lives.

And apparently nobody in this drama has ever heard the phrase:

“Maybe don't sacrifice yourself today.” 🤦‍♀️

The final stretch makes their relationship much darker as Zhang Haixia's condition and conflicting consciousness become central to the story.

😭 The Ending

And then Episode 33 decided we had not suffered enough.

Zhang Haixia is struggling with two consciousnesses inside the same body. During the final confrontation, his original self resurfaces, but he cannot bring himself to kill Zhang Hailou.

He tells him that he is tired and wants to rest.

Zhang Haixia dies.

Zhang Hailou survives and has to continue without him.

So yes:

💔 Ending Classification: TRAGIC ENDING

  • Zhang Haixia: dies.
  • Zhang Hailou: survives.
  • Zhang Haiqi: is revived.
  • Zhang Qianjun + Feng Huang: marry.
  • Years later: Zhang Hailou has disciples and continues the Zhang family's mission.

The story continues, but the central friendship ends in permanent separation.

RUDE. 😭

💗 Shen Zhiyi’s Drama Reality Check

Finished all 33 episodes. Full ending and relationship spoilers.

💕 Romance
Very Low / Essentially None — no central romance.
🔥 Chemistry
High — especially Zhang Hailou and Zhang Haixia as a platonic duo.
💋 Kissing
None for the main leads.
🤗 Skinship
Low romantically — physical/emotional closeness is friendship and brotherhood rather than romance.
🌶️ Spiciness / Adult Intimacy
None for the main leads.
🚩 ML Red Flag
Not really applicable romantically — reckless self-sacrifice is another story. 🤦‍♀️
👑 Female Lead Competence
High — Zhang Haiqi is capable, experienced, and important to the plot.
⏱️ Romance Timing
N/A — there is no main romance.
❤️‍🔥 Relationship Payoff
Strong emotionally, not romantically — the central friendship carries the drama.
💔 Breakup
None.
⏳ Separation / Conflict
Major — conflict, dangerous missions, identity/consciousness complications, and ultimately permanent separation through death.
💍 Final Relationship Status
No main romantic couple. Zhang Haixia dies; Zhang Hailou survives and continues his mission.
📖 Plot
Strong — mystery, adventure, conspiracy, Zhang-family lore, action, and supernatural elements kept me interested despite the lack of romance.
🐾 Animal Harm
No specific dog/cat harm currently verified. Do not claim “none” globally unless independently checked.
About these assessments

My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.

⭐ Final Rating

4/5

Not romance…but GOOD. 😂

And for me, that is actually a huge compliment because this drama managed to remove one of my favorite parts of C-dramas and still keep me watching for 33 episodes.

The mystery worked. The characters worked. The Zhang-family craziness worked. The friendship worked.

Would I have accepted some romance?

Obviously. I am still me. 😂❤️

But Archives: The Nanyang Mystery did not need it badly enough for me to punish the drama for leaving it out.

4/5.
