A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL
🌸 My Review
I actually liked Swords into Plowshares. The acting is strong, the historical setting feels huge, and there is clearly a lot of care put into showing just how chaotic this period of history was.
But LORD.
Forty-eight episodes.
And these are not fluffy little episodes where I blink and accidentally finish six of them. These are full historical-drama episodes packed with emperors, ministers, wars, court politics, alliances, betrayals, reforms, territorial disputes, deaths, and speeches about the fate of the people.
At some point I was basically like:
WE GET IT. CHINA IS IN TURMOIL. PLEASE LET THESE PEOPLE REST. 😭
To be fair, the huge scope is also one of its strengths. The drama follows people trying to survive one unstable political order after another while moving toward something more peaceful.
So yes, the length has a purpose.
I just think we could have reached that purpose with slightly less mileage. 😂
❤️ Qian Hongchu & Sun Taizhen
Thankfully, there is romance.
Qian Hongchu and Sun Taizhen have the kind of relationship I usually appreciate: they grow together, support each other, marry, and don't spend the whole drama repeatedly breaking up over nonsense.
This is not a steamy romance-first drama. Their relationship feels more like a mature life-partner marriage inside a giant historical epic.
But it works because they genuinely feel devoted to each other.
And then apparently after making me watch 48 episodes, the drama decided I had not suffered enough. 😭
💔 The Ending
Sun Taizhen becomes seriously ill in the finale.
Qian Hongchu remains by her side, and she dies while they are still married and in love. He survives her.
So even though the larger historical story moves toward peace, the romantic ending is NOT happy.
For my system this is a clear Tragic Ending.
RUDE. 😭

About these assessments
My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.
⭐ Final Rating: 3.5/5
Good historical drama. Good performances. Interesting period. Stable marriage.
But 48 episodes felt like 480. 😭
I respect what it was trying to do. I even liked a lot of it.
I just did not need to personally experience decades of political history to get there. 😂
3.5/5 — somebody please turn those swords into plowshares faster.
