A PERSONAL VIEWING JOURNAL
🌸 My Review
Born With Luck had a concept that sounded like it could be hilarious: instead of genius detectives chasing genius criminals, everybody keeps making terrible decisions and somehow the case still moves forward. 😂
And sometimes it really was funny.
The criminals are spectacularly bad at crime, people accidentally create evidence against themselves, plans go wrong in increasingly ridiculous ways, and Zhang Yi'ang seems to have his luck stat maxed out whenever another clue conveniently lands in front of him.
At first I was entertained.
Then eventually I was sitting there like:
ARE WE GOING TO INVESTIGATE ANYTHING OR ARE WE JUST WAITING FOR THE CRIMINALS TO ARREST THEMSELVES?? 😭
That is basically where my 2.5/5 comes from.
I do not automatically need romance to enjoy a drama. If the mystery, crime plot, characters, or suspense are strong enough, I can absolutely enjoy something without a love story.
But if you take the romance away, the actual investigation needs to carry me.
Here, too much of the mystery depends on coincidence, luck, criminals being unbelievably stupid, or somebody accidentally revealing exactly what the police need.
There is a difference between controlled chaos and a story constantly going, “Well, luckily THIS happened…” 😂
😂 Comedy
Some of the absurd humor genuinely works.
Watching criminals completely destroy their own plans can be hilarious, especially when several bad decisions collide at once.
But stupidity-based comedy has a shelf life for me.
Eventually I stop laughing and start asking:
WHY ARE ALL OF YOU LIKE THIS?! 🤦♀️
The actors were doing their jobs. The concept had potential. I just needed the writing to trust the mystery more instead of constantly leaning on the joke.
👑 Li Qian
One thing I appreciated is that Li Qian is actually capable.
She is useful, action-oriented, and allowed to behave like someone who belongs in law enforcement instead of becoming dead weight for the male characters to rescue.
You already know I will always appreciate a woman who can actually do her job. ❤️
Unfortunately, one competent woman could not save an entire universe apparently powered by questionable decision-making. 😂
🧩 Plot
The interconnected-criminal structure is probably the most interesting part of the drama.
Different schemes keep crashing into each other, bad decisions create unexpected consequences, and those consequences help push the investigation forward.
When the balance works, it feels like carefully organized chaos.
When it does not work, it feels like the writers needed another clue and simply asked fate to deliver one.
That happened too often for me.
💕 Romance
Basically none.
And again, that is not automatically a problem.
I have rated non-romance dramas much higher when the central mystery or story was strong enough to compensate.
This one just did not consistently compensate.
No kissing. No romantic payoff. No main couple to root for.
So if the crime plot starts losing me too, there is nothing else left to rescue the experience. 😭
✅ Happy Ending — Crime/Investigation Storyline
The central investigation is resolved and the major criminal storyline reaches closure.
However, this is NOT a romantic happy ending, because the drama does not have a central main couple whose relationship needs resolution.
Final romantic status:
No central romantic couple

About these assessments
My impressions cover what I watched. Later research is labeled on dropped reviews. Kissing, affection and adult intimacy are separate; coercion does not count as romantic spice. Being apart does not automatically mean a breakup.
⭐ Final Rating: 2.5/5
The actors were better than the material, Li Qian was competent, and some of the criminals were genuinely hilarious.
But I need either romance or a crime/mystery story strong enough to make me forget there is no romance.
This gave me neither consistently.
By the time the criminals were practically solving their own cases through sheer stupidity, I had enough. 😂🤦♀️
2.5/5 — funny sometimes, clever in concept, but way too much “born with luck” and not enough “born with investigative skills.” 😭
