Why it’s on this list

Strong. Xu Lai is a reporter and trained international rescue-dog trainer. She is persistent, capable, and knows exactly what she wants.

Good to know

Competence collection includes some non-romance Chinese dramas; no happy-ending promise.

ML red flags

Moderate. Jin Shichuan is protective and caring, but his Episode 18 decision to break up with Xu Lai because he thinks he knows what is best for her earns him some serious 🙄 points.

Animal-harm warning

🚨 HIGH — repeated dog injury, danger, distress, and a confirmed rescue-dog death in the backstory. Champion is injured jumping through a ring of fire after being overtrained. Ping’an collapses after entering the water during a rescue and is rushed to the hospital. Jin Shichuan’s former rescue dog Zhui Feng is revealed to have died from exhaustion after being seriously injured while rescuing him. This is the main reason I dropped the drama. If you love dogs, don’t watch this one.

• Hidden Identity Revealed: Changyu eventually learns that her husband is not simply Yan Zheng. He is Xie Zheng, Marquis of Wu'an. She is legitimately angry about being deceived. However, the identity conflict does not erase the love that has already developed between them.
• Later Arc: Military and political conflict create periods of physical separation. This should not be presented as a conventional romantic breakup. Even while circumstances keep them apart, their loyalty continues.
• Episode 40: The couple makes it through the final conflict and remains together. The marriage that began as an arrangement ends as an actual loving partnership.

Animal-harm warning

Real-horse stunt controversy; no confirmed death

Watch out for

Important Real-Animal Welfare Warning Strong · Real production stunt shown on screen There was a major real-world controversy involving a real stunt horse used during filming. A horse is shown being brought down during a high-speed riding sequence and falling violently head/neck-first. The footage caused widespread accusations of animal abuse because of how dangerous the stunt appeared. The stunt-horse supplier later stated that the horse was specially trained, survived the stunt, remained healthy afterward, and continued appearing in other productions. I could not verify a confirmed death, so I am not going to say that an animal definitely died. However, a real horse was used for a dangerous stunt that caused serious animal-welfare concerns, and that absolutely affects my rating. I don’t care how good your drama is. Animals are not expendable props.
